while enjoying the carlsbad caverns, i found out that there were other fun natural attractions to go that weren't much more than an hour away, including some peaks with good views in the guadalupe mountains and a waterfall in the lincoln national forest. it was already late, so they would have to wait until the next day. the peaks were potentially off the table as an option because it had been (and would still be the next day) extremely windy. i drove part of the distance toward the waterfall and found a spot to sleep in my van a half mile up an unnamed rocky dirt road which branched off of a desolate county road called dark canyon. assuming i studied the map correctly at the cavern's visitor center, i was well within blm property and therefore in a legit place to camp. sometimes it's pretty difficult to know when i'm actually on blm property.
