nola - superbowl sunday

what are the chances that on my long journey all over the usa, i would find myself in new orleans to experience them become superbowl champions for the first time ever?

in the morning i went with kim and lindsay to the church that kim works for. it's also the church where some famous manning guy attends : ), but i didn't see him because i think he was at work or something that day... hmm.  the building was decorated with black and gold and the theme of the service was all about the saints.  and yes, of course they sang 'when the saints go marching in.'  kim had done an excellent job designing the bulletin and some of the decor.   the service was interesting and fun.

after the service, the three of us went searching for king cake. we had to look all over because some of the great hole-in-the-wall places were shut for various reasons.  we found a place that sells it, but not by the slice...  oh well, i'd have to try that latter.  instead we went to get po boys at cooter browns.  the menu there also had 'phillys' which is apparently they way they refer to philly cheese steaks.  we picked up the sandwiches and headed for audubon park to sit on a bench.  it was a bit chilly, but at least the sun was finally out!  here's me and my oyster po boy.

we shared conversation, discussing a bit of life and where we're at in it.   then we went to meet up with a group to watch the superbowl at their friends' house.  i considered it quite a privilege to watch the game with them.

the hosts also had some awesome foods, most of which i forget what it was called.  i had some some gumbo and then this super sweet banana foster.   deliciousness.  sugar coma!

winning the superbowl was such an amazing accomplishment for the city, and i got to be there to share in the celebration.   and wow, was everyone excited!  : )

when the game finished, people poured into the streets yelling, running, giving high-fives to strangers, repeatedly asking the rhetorical question 'who dat?,' and otherwise acting like chickens with their heads cut off.   it was awesome.

as the reality sunk in that they had really won the superbowl, the obvious next step was to head down to the quarter and celebrate with the masses.  so that's what we did.  at least, laura, kim, katie, rob, and i did.

we navigated the our way through the french quarter, giving high fives to complete strangers and cheering at random intervals.

the place was bursting with excitement and 'who dat' was the predominant resounding anthem.  we danced our way past musicians and dj's as we headed to bourbon street.  boubon was dense with bodies.

we dove on in and did our best to stay together.  as we swam through, i felt my feet crunching on broken glass and trash and puddles and who knows what else, but it was impossible to see the ground to find out.  unfortunately my camera batter died, but laura took this shot of the five of us while we were crammed in the middle of bourbon street.

we walked a few blocks away to a decent dj stand and danced in the street for about an hour.  there were a couple other guys who were doing some hip-hop flavored dancing and for a few minutes we had a subtle battle going on.   it was so much fun.   i couldn't resist getting down and doing some basic ground level moves, which by the end of the night made my palm bleed a little because of the broken glass.   so worth it though : )

after our fill of celebration, we got back to the house at a reasonable hour, happily exhausted.  laura got out her arsenal of medical supplies so i could clean out my little cut.

what a great evening! it was a special day of history for the city, and i'm glad i got to be there to participate in it.

who dat!!!!
