i spent the night at a rest stop on i-59 about 40 minutes short of birmingham, alabama. the rest stop had a relaxing landscape.
i had originally planned to get the day going early, but didn't actually get moving until after 10am. it turns out sleeping in was a much better idea because the van had warmed up nicely in the sun by then.
making my way into birmingham
i walked around the downtown area looking at buildings and investigating a couple of internet cafe options.
one cafe looked like it wasn't a cafe anymore because the building was being remodeled into a restaurant. another cafe i looked at was basically an upscale restaurant - strike two. the third place i went was more like what i was searching for. it was called urban standard.
the place had a pretty comfortable atmosphere. i was impressed by the huge variety of seating-styles to choose from; there were various couches, stools, tables of different shapes, and even some old auditorium seats. i got a cup of cappuccino and sat on a couch.
based on a tip i got from my friend jason in philly, i went up to vulcan park.
from there i had a great elevated view of the city.
i stood out in the warmth of the sun and had a good long phone chat with a friend while looking out over the city. i also gazed up at the statue that was carving the moon in the sky, but wasn't willing to pay the fee required to visit its slightly higher viewing deck. with my limited budget, i'm on the lookout for free things. drop the "r" from "free" and my interest rapidly declines.
i went back down into the city to look around a little more and then continued north toward nashville.
