new orleans, louisiana - arrival

i headed to new orleans expecting to have a pretty fun time.  little did i know, it was going to be a complete blast of a time!!!!!  i don't even know how to express how much i enjoyed it.  i guess i'll just start telling about what happened...

as i approached the city, the interstate turned into a long stretch of causeway over low-lying flooded plains with a bunch of houses down to the side.  some houses were on low ground accessible by a service road.  some were built on pilings and only accessible by boat.  many of them were deserted or in great disrepair - merely a precursor of what i would see in various parts of the new orleans.

the traffic of superbowl-ready football fans driving to the city was becoming more dense as i got closer.

approaching new orleans central business district

i drove right into the heart of the action.  the traffic was nuts and reminded me of my hometown on busy summer holiday weekends. people were everywhere, cars were everywhere, lights were everywhere.  however, new orleans was more extreme and more unique.  it also had live music everywhere, great architecture, cool alleyways, and the legality to drink alcohol openly in the streets. people were excited.  in the french quarter, traffic was in gridlock.  i enjoyed it so much!  when i tried to leave, it took almost an hour just to get my van out of the french quarter area.

i think this was where we, the motor traffic were trying to cross bourbon street which was just a mass of flowing human bodies.  it sure took a while.

i thought the elevated police post was pretty interesting.  it's as though they expect this crowd to be around for weeks at a time.... hmh.  : )

the reason i was trying to leave the french quarter was because i got a text message...
