San Diego, California

I continued south by myself. since sunset was near, I was again drawn
to the beach - sunset beach, in fact. I got maybe one picture and then
my camara battery died. it was very windy and slightly chilly on the
beach. sunset colors and cloud formations were glorious.

then I drove down to downtown San Diego to see it even though it was
dark. after cruising the streets with my Christmas lights lit in tow,
I went searching for a place to sleep. i tried one walmart, but the
lot security dude seemed uncomfortable and suspicious about my van
when i parked it in a corner, so instead of giving him grief I opted
to go to a nice rest stop that I had also scoped out earlier. it
turned out to be my best van rest so far!

this was at sunset beach...

LA

I took up hjohn and lib's offer to sleep in a motel room. we all
wanted to camp, but hj was feeling super sick, so we opted for
something that would provide slightly better facilities.

we drove both of our vehicles around Beverly hills and into downtown
los Angeles just to get some site-seeing in. expensive cars. expensive
houses. expensive gas. cheap tour. then we parted ways at the walt
disney concert hall. I don't think I remembered to take any photos of
any of this.

all day I was wearing sandals and couldn't help but to think often of
all the boot-type weather i was missing back in Philly under two feet
of snow.

hjohn libby and i drove along the southern california coast.  oh man i love this place!

fresno and bakersfield california

I stopped working for bob in placerville in order to journey a few hours south to Fresno where i was going to meet up with hjohn and libby!! they are good friends from Philly who are spending a few days in southern California. they had some last minute changes in travel plans, so instead I just did a little bit of needed shopping and spent night #2 in my van! this time I had the company of several rv campers in the walmart parking lot.

the next morning I drove to Bakersfield to meet my friends!

and then I accepted the invitation to stay the night at Maryland's house. she is hjohn's very sweet mother.

Christmas

I hope all of you have a great Christmas season.  while I personally could take or leave Christmas as a holiday, each day I can only take, and could never leave Jesus as my righteousness.  if it was not for Jesus, i would have no hope of receiving God's favor. I'm glad Jesus was born - it is His righteousness that has earned my salvation. if anyone sees any real good in me, it is merely a miracle and all the thanks goes to Jesus. though i'm completely undeserving, he has loved me and given me life and joy and hope.  no one could love me more than Jesus who gave his own life, from birth until death, to save mine.  by his mercy, that love is sometimes reflected in my behavior.   out of gratitude I will seek to serve him by serving others for the rest of my journey on earth.

Christmas lights

if you're in California and see a van with some Christmas lights
draped on it, it might just be my van! : ).

work work work - round two

I went back to do another four days of getting grout into that wall
for one of my newest friends. so Monday thru Thursday looked pretty
much the same... I'd wake up around 7:30am. I'd get some breakfast,
drink some coffee made by my awesome friends/hosts Jim and Janet, and
grab some food for lunch. I'd drive about 16 miles from shingle
springs to placerville and work from about 9 to 4. then I'd drive
home, chat with Jim until Janet got home, we'd eat dinner, watch some
tv while talking about stuff until about 10 when it was time to go to
bed. repeat x4.
on Tuesday I was so enamored by the sunset, that I accidently drove an
extra 10 miles past my exit! oops, I more than doubled the length of
my commute home, but it was worth it. : )

half moon bay

palo alto was only an hour from the ocean. I didn't want to pass up
another chance to see the coastline, so I went to half moon bay. not
willing to pay for parking, I drove north along the waters edge until
I found a free spot. at the forth or fifth place I investigated, I
finally had success. just north of the nearby harbor is a little town
called Princeton. there is a road called west point ave that I took
adjacent to a wetland reserved area until i got to a muddy, but free
parking lot on the left before the road enters some facility. then I
walked along a beach on the calm harbor side to get around the
peninsula to the waves. from there I saw a spectacular sunset! the
sky was still stormy from the daytime rains, but was open over the
water where the sun was setting. to make it even better, the pacific
waves were spraying high as they pounded some large rocks out in the
water. since my descriptions won't do justice to the beauty, you'll
just have to imagine it or go find that secret spot yourself
sometime. I didn't really bother trying to capture the beauty by
photo either, but did get another shot of me on my head. photo to
come latter. the parking lot had lots of ticket/towing/lockin after
sunset signs, so I hurried back to my van to get on my way.

palo alto, ca

last Saturday night I had the pleasure of staying with ray and
virginia, parents of my previous hosts. ive been hoping for a long
while to spend some time with these great people, and it finally
happened! they are well travelled and quite active folks which always
makes for fun stories.

they have an amazing collection of nativity displays (over a hundred?)
all over their house made of all sorts on materials. a lot of them are
from different parts of the world, reflecting the cultures in the
designs.

family time

I spent all last week at my sister jeni and mark's place.
I got to watch my nieces and nephews at their various weekly
activities including schoolwork at home, sabrina and julias piano
lesson, sabrinas jazz dance class, josh's violin lesson and basketball
practice, and isaiahs first ever basketball game. Isaiah is only 5 by
the way, and he did great! they are all so talented. it's been quite a
blessing getting to stay with them and be a part of their lives, even
if it's only a couple days at a time.
I plan to meet up with them all again at a cabin for Christmas.

who knew?

here is a fun, never before seen list of things that i'm sure VERY few people have ever known about me...   well, until now!

1.) in high school track i trained for pole vaulting.
2.) i can make bubbles with my saliva and then blow them off my tongue and watch them float to the floor.  i remember at one point having eight unpopped 'salvubbles' at once.
3.) joshua harris was once my lead pastor.
4.) i had the wrong two teeth pulled.
5.) i cut over ten tons of fresh fudge in two summers.  (ate a lot of it, too!)
6.) i discovered some basic mathematical theories prior to learning them in grade school.
7.) during sunday school i discovered and perfected the art of pealing off the shiny inner layer of a werthers original wrapper to rub it onto the metal part of a folding table to create a backup mirror.
8.) i'm convinced that one of my eyes looks bigger than the other.
9.) i would like to see our written language officially changed to shorthand and all of our numerical systems changed to base eight.
10.) what do mints, chocolates, coffee, the sun, and dust all have in common?  they each make me sneeze when i first encounter them (among a few other things that do the same!)
11.) once, to deter my friends from kicking my hacky sack into a nearby boardwalk garbage can filled with pizza sauce stained paper plates and unfinished dripping ice cream cones, i established the penalty that the guilty party must retrieve it with just their teeth and no hands, no matter how far it sunk down.  Guess who was the next and only person to kick it in there...  yup, yours truly.
12.) for my first job after college i commuted 90 miles each way, filling the gas tank every morning at 5:30am.
13.) i like to see how far i can run with my eyes closed.  wildwood beach is an excellent place to do this.
14.) i really want to know what our current cultural etiquette is domestically for escalator use.  is it considered rude to stand on the left so that others can't pass?  is it considered rude to verbally express your desire to pass someone who is standing on the left?
15.) i draped a garden hose over the roof of our house to communicate with my sister in another room.
16.) i did a years worth of high school algebra homework on one piece of paper, written really really really small.
17.) in general, i prefer watching chick-flicks over action movies.
18.) i plan to celebrate my one-billionth second since birth, which will occur in about two years from now.
19.) Yjod od .u drvtry vpfr ;smhishr
Place your fingers one key to the left and type what's above as though your fingers were in the correct keyboard position... and then forget it forever!
20.) i learned only recently that most zippers are designed with a locking mechanism.  oohhhhh!

sick

i decided to take a break from working and drove two hours back to my sister's house on sunday.   i must have picked up a bug somewhere because later that evening i felt pretty gross.  while watching a dvd with mark and jeni, i vomited everything out of my system.   that night i couldn't sleep and all of monday i stayed in bed with no appetite and no energy.  it took until tuesday morning before i could stomach any food, or even think.  jeni took good care of me, making sure i stayed hydrated and had anything i needed to feel better.  such a big sister.  : )

when i'm very exhausted or feeling gross and sick, i tend to put a higher value on having a home - a place of comfort where i can retreat.  i'm probably more susceptible to sickness because traveling is exhausting and i'm also encountering many unfamiliar germs.  what i wonder is if my body will eventually become more accustom to the stresses of traveling.   either way, when i'm sick i also value more the love and care of my hosts who have been my home away from...  my van.

work work work

my trip changed pace last week.  as i mentioned in an earlier post, i was actually working!  i admit i don't really miss working, but i also admit it was good to do work.  tuesday through saturday i spent outside trying to do a good job with the grouting.  washing down the wall with a sponge to get the grout off the tiles felt like the most tedious part.

close-up example of before and after

Jordan and I made a pretty good team

each evening after working i tried to catch up on note and letter writing and enjoyed conversations with my hosts.  that pretty much sums up my whole week.

tahoe

keren, josh, kallie and i took the replacement rental car to lake tahoe.  the last two times i was at the lake, it was summertime.  typically by december there would be snow at the lake, but there wasn't much snow when we visited.  that's ok, it was still pretty.

i also continued my tradition of standing on my head, especially since this was on a nice beach with good friends.  however, the photo wasn't on my camara so i don't have it yet.

reception

kallie's mom organized a fantastic party as a second wedding reception for kallie and josh in placerville, california.  i was in their pittsburgh wedding in september and was honored to celebrate with them once again on the west coast.   besides the set-up and clean-up, the evening was dominated by mexican food, a wedding cake, good people and dancing.

i really love these people.

san fran

a quick site-seeing trip to san francisco certainly packed in plenty of adventure for one evening.

first we stopped at a reservoir in the bay area where my friends got engaged a year ago.  there is a nice trail through the woods that surrounds the water.   as my friends reminisced, we were entertained by their recollections and reenactment.   maybe we had too much fun and lost track of time because when we got back to our metered parking spot, three vehicles had parking tickets - OUR three vehicles.  clearly, we underestimated how much time we would spend there.  this is the second ticket i've earned on my trip which is not very good on my budget!   oh well.  this particular ticket costed me about 350 miles in gas money.  : (

after the reservoir, we split up and two cars proceeded to san francisco.  josh, kallie, keren, and I consolidated into their rental car to ease the toll and parking hassle.  apparently we weren't done looking for tickets.  the toll into the city had a 15 minute delay.  so, we decided to use the bus/carpool ramp which had no car in sight.  unfortunately, after it was too late to return to the regular tolls, we realized the carpool hours did NOT apply to us and we were facing a $270 charge!  we had no choice but to continue in that lane and hope for the best.  sure enough, there were two motorcycle patrol officers on duty to snatch and fine trespassers.  but guess what, they were both still busy writing tickets for three other cars that they had recently pulled over!  wow.  sigh of relief.

we enjoyed driving around the city.
we stopped at a well-known bridge.

we went to see a well-known row of houses.

our evening plans were disrupted at this point because the rental car wouldn't turn off.  the key wouldn't turn or come out of the ignition no matter what we tried.  this meant no lombard ave, no fisherman's wharf.  instead we took a trip to a closed avis and then a trip to an open avis at the sf airport where we worked out a vehicle exchange.

so, we had adventures.  not exactly the ones we planned, but what adventures are fully planned anyway?

work

i spent the weekend with dear friends in shingle springs, california
near sacramento. I had a great time! pictures of the fun will come
later.

then on tuesday I helped one of their friends who is building his
house grout some exterior wall tiles. at the end of the day, based on
our pace, there were enough walls left to keep a few guys busy for a
few more days. so, I agreed to put in more days of work this week to
help the project along. out of gratitude, I've been offered some cash
for the work, which will go a long way to help me on my journey.
