the rain caught up to me when i got to north key largo. during that time i pulled over and got an hour nap in my van.
then i headed over to everglades national park. after doing some research i concluded that there wasn't an option to sleep in the park. my visit there would just have to be put on the list of places i'd like to check out some other time. it's a really huge national park and i'm sure it would be fun to see.
instead, i worked my way north around the everglades with the wilderness on my left and the urban sprawl of miami on my right.
it was getting late and the sleeping options were sparse in the area. i asked the employees of a gas station if i could stay in their parking lot. they said i would be charged $15. um, that's not gonna do. instead i went across the street to the only other establishment around. it was a casino.
the casino was a hotel with a gaming room on the first floor. i went in and fought through the smoke inside to acquire a free permit from the security desk for sleeping in my van in their lot. except for the cost of smelling like gross smoke when i went outside, it was indeed free. beats the $15 option! and it was my last option other than driving another couple of hours.
clearly i wasn't the only one spending the night there.
if you know me well, you know i don't gamble. so staying at a casino was funny and ironic. i was probably one of few people that night who left that parking lot with as much money as when i entered it.
off to my next day of traveling adventures...
